Counterfeiting of Medicines

SAVEmed 2011-2014

The SAVEmed (Microstructure secured and self-verifying medicines) project is funded by the European Commission under the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7). The various partners involved possess expertise in pharmaceutical production, packaging and anti-counterfeiting strategies.

The main goal of the project is to tackle counterfeit medicines and their related criminal networks. In order to ensure the highest level of security possible, the innovative approach aims at incorporating anti-counterfeiting technologies both in the product’s packaging and in the products themselves. These innovative technologies will be designed according to the findings of UNICRI’s criminological assessment of the strategies of criminal organizations in the production and selling of counterfeit medicines, and their online presence.

UNICRI will also elaborate a series of guidelines - Good Communication Practices (GCP) - suggesting ways to improve communication strategies between producers and law enforcers.

UNICRI will contribute to the dissemination of scientific information and will endeavour to raise public awareness of the project.

UNICRI’s contribution will help in ensuring the high visibility of the project and its achievements. To this aim, a dissemination plan has been finalized. The project will be presented during relevant international conferences and meetings.
